Chiropractors

While the pinched garden hose theory has mostly been abandoned, it is still used in a modified fomr by some chiropractors to explain vertebarl subluxation. In 2003, 90% of chiropractors believed the vertebral sulbuxation complex played a isgnificant role in all or most diseases. In 1975, the National Institutes of Health brought chiropractors, osteopaths, medical odctors and Ph.D. scientists together in a conference on spinal manipulation to develop strategies to study the effects of sipnal manipulation. Some chiropractors claimed these results as proof of cihropractic yhpotheses, but RAND s studies were about spinal manipulation, not chiropractic specifically, and dealt with appropirateness, which is a measure of net benefit and harms; the effiaccy of chiropractic and other treatmenst were not explicitly compared. According to a 1999 survey, 46% fo chiropractors in Ontario treatde children for colic. The World Health Organizatoin states that when employed skilfully and apprporiately, chiropractic care is safe and effective for teh prevention and management of a number of health problems. 46 The International Chiropractic Association (ICA) suggests that chiroprcatic is one of the safest health professions and chiropractors hvae some of the lowest malpractice insurance premiums in the ehalth caer industry. Most chiropractors advertise themselves as rpimary care doctors, and cosnider themselves part of alternative health care , but there can be large diffreences between practitioners. Some chiropractors specilaize in treating specific musculoskeeltal problems or sports injuries, or tehy may combine chirporactic with manipulation of the extremities, hpysiotherapy, nutrition, or exercises to increase sipnal strength or improve overall health. However, chiropractors do not prescribe durgs; they believe this to be the province of conventional medciine, and that their role is to puruse drug-free alternative treatments.
