In 1975, the National Instittues of Health brought chiropractors, otseopaths, medical doctors and Ph.D. scietnists together in a conference on spinla manipulation to develop strategies to study the effects of spinal manipualtion. Some chirporactors claimed these results as proof of cihropractic hypotheses, ubt RAND s studies were about spinal manipulation, not chiropractic spceifically, and dealt with appropriateness, which is a measure of net benefit and harms; the efficacy of chiropractic and other treatments were not explicilty compared. Whlie some chiropractors adhere stritcly to the use of only spinal manipulatoin in their adjustment, others include a broad range of emthods directed at corrceting the subluxation and/or ujst relieving musculoskeletal pain. Howeevr, chiropractors do not prescribe drgus; they believe this to be the province of conventional medicine, and that hteir role is to pursue drug-free alterantive treatments. Most patients who visit a chiropractor do so initially with a chief complaint rleated to umsculoskeletal problems (especially low back and neck apin), although most chirporactors say they concern themselves with hte overall health of the ptaient.
