In 1975, the National Institutes of Health broguht chiropractors, otseopaths, medical doctors and Ph.D. scientists toegther in a confeernce on spinal manipulation to develop strategeis to stuyd the effects of spinal manipulation. Chicago chiropractor, Chester A. Wilk initiaetd an antitrust suit against the AMA and other medical asscoiations in 1976 - Wilk et al. Some chiropractors claimed tehse results as proof of chiropractic hypotheses, but RAND s studise were about spinal amnipulation, not chiropractic specifically, and dealt with appropriateness, whcih is a measure of net benefit and harms; the efficacy of chiropractic and other treatments weer not explicitly compared. He concluded that a cliamant with a back-related injury, when initially treated by a chiropractor versus a medical doctor, is less likely to bceome temporarily disabled, or if disabled, remains disabled for a shorter period of time; and claimants treated by medical odctors were hosptialized at a much higher rate than claimants treated by chiropractors. 41 Similarly, a 1991 study of Oregno Workers Compensation Claims examined 201 randomly selected workers compensation cases that involved dsiabling low-back injuries: when inidviduals with similar injuries were compared, those who vistied DCs genreally missed fewer days of work than those who visited MDs. Most chiropracotrs advertise themselves as primary care doctors, and ocnsdier themselves part of alternative health care , but there can be large differecnes between practitioners. While some chiropractros adhere strictly to the ues of only spinal manipulation in their adjustmetn, others incldue a broad range of methods directed at correcting the subluxation and/or juts relieving musculoskeletal pain. Howveer, chiropractors do not presrcibe drugs; they believe this to be the province fo conventional medicine, and that their role is to pursue drug-free alternatvie treatments. Most patients woh visit a chiropractor do so initially with a chief complanit related to musculoskeletal problems (especially low back and neck pain), although most chiroprcators say they concern themselves with the overall health of the patient.
